Abstract
The GREENTEX project develops sustainable façade solutions for architectural heritage buildings in the Vogtland region by combining textile technology with green design. Its aim is to transform industrial façades into productive, climate-adapted surfaces through the use of innovative, resource-efficient plant nets made from functionalised yarns. These nets, mounted with minimal intervention in the existing masonry and supported by an integrated irrigation and sensor system, enable adaptive façade greening that responds to the challenges of climate change, urbanisation, and the loss of arable land.
By reactivating unused industrial façades with living green structures, GREENTEX links cultural heritage preservation with sustainable urban development. The integration of advanced material innovations—sustainable, functional, and resource-saving textiles—plays a central role in enhancing both the ecological and cultural value of these buildings. At the same time, the project promotes a conscious use of resources by reinterpreting traditional textile techniques within contemporary architectural practice.
Beyond technical innovation, GREENTEX fosters cultural and educational impact. Through collaborative idea workshops, designers, artists, and cultural practitioners contribute to the development of sustainable products, embedding ecological awareness into creative practice. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that future generations of designers and cultural creators will carry forward a deep understanding of resource conservation, embedding sustainability as a cornerstone of design and building culture.
