Network project:

Development of multidimensional textile structures filled with gypsum foam as individual and lightweight wall and ceiling elements for new functional and design solutions for building renovations and conversions - GIPSTEX

Subproject:

SP 5: Development of textile basic structures and elaboration of technical design of multidimensional textile structures for filling with gypsum foam

03WIR0707E

Abstract

Textiles are increasingly becoming a building material in a broad sense. With the properties attributed to them of flexibility and design, they are becoming a new working element with a new application in combination with gypsum foam. Existing fields of competence are linked in a new way in the project network.
The gypsum foam-filled multi-dimensional envelope structures can be used for interior design as wall or ceiling elements. Especially for rooms in old, solidly constructed industrial buildings, this makes it possible to use them again. The modules open up the opportunity for the most flexible redesign possible.

Problem

The project addresses the implementation programme "Development and production of textile innovations for the preservation of architectural heritage". The development of composite structures made of textile moulded elements and mineral gypsum foam building materials creates innovative, recyclable, reusable and ecological products. In the joint project, the task "Development of multidimensional textile structures filled with gypsum foam as individual and lightweight wall and ceiling elements for novel functional and design solutions for building renovations and conversions" is being realised. The aim is to develop wall and ceiling structures made of multidimensional textile systems that are filled with mineral foams and include both design and functional solutions. The joint project is being carried out in an association of companies and research institutions.

Solution

To achieve the objectives of the overall "GIPSTEX" project, the research project is divided into five sub-projects.

MFPA sub-project: "Development of gypsum foam building materials with specifically adjusted properties for the filling of multi-dimensional textile structures and their testing on a laboratory scale".

Subproject Pfand: "Functionalisation of multidimensional textile structures filled with gypsum foam as individual and lightweight wall and ceiling elements for new functional and design solutions for building renovations and conversions".

Subproject VEP: "Elaboration of application technologies for the developed gypsum foams for the filling of multi-dimensional textile structures as well as their testing on a laboratory scale".

Subproject HSP: "Application of gypsum foam building materials with specifically adjusted properties for interior design with multi-dimensional textile structures taking into account technical parameters and design components".

Subproject TITV: "Development of multidimensional textile structures filled with gypsum foam as individual lightweight wall and ceiling elements for new functional and design solutions for building renovations and conversions".

The sub-projects of the project partners are specified in sub-project descriptions. The work plan is supported by work packages in terms of content and time. The partners exchange information on the progress of the project at regular project meetings.

In the TITV sub-project, investigations are being carried out on the following focal points:

  • Development of the textile base material
  • Structuring and production of three-dimensional envelope modules
  • Fastening solutions for the multiaxial modules.

Results and Applications

As a result of the project, a new type of modular lightweight construction system is being developed from a composite of plaster and textile structures. The following requirements are met:

  • possibility of modular construction
  • freely formable, individually designable
  • adaptation to existing building structures for the realisation of conversions of existing building fabric
  • comparatively simple construction
  • improvement of fire and sound protection depending on the design
  • simple possibility of recyclability/reusability
  • contribution to the further enhancement of the textile tradition of the Vogtland region.

Using the modular textile wall and ceiling systems, new room-in-room structures can be realised for longer-term but also temporary applications. Particularly in the case of ceiling structures, the requirements for the renovation of listed buildings, which until now have only been possible with great effort, can be realised flexibly, more quickly and possibly more cost-effectively thanks to the new systems.

The project team is developing two demonstrators. On the one hand, a module for a cable suspension and, on the other hand, three combination modules for free-standing systems available in the room have been developed.
